James Herriot lived and worked there and the Herriot Centre is the only veterinary science museum in the country.
The medieval cobbled market square hosts a twice weekly market and is surrounded by individual shops, traditional inns and tea rooms.
To the west lie the Yorkshire Dales, Ripon, the elegant spa town of Harrogate and the World Heritage Site at Fountains Abbey.
To the east lie the market towns of Helmsley and Pickering, terminus for the North Yorkshire Moors steam train.
Castle Howard and York are within an hour’s drive and easily accessible are Scarborough, Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay and Staithes.

A lovely cottage, very comfortable for two couples, in a quiet and picturesque location. Easy access (by car) to many interesting places just a few miles away. Great pub in the village (two miles distant but walkable along a single track road).

Fantastic location with stunning views and not too far from Thirsk town centre. We especially loved seeing the horses in the fields around the cottage. The cottage was cosy and welcoming, the only complaint I would make is that I’d have liked to have had either a hoover or broom, and a mop due to ou...

The cottage is very remote and in a lovely quiet setting with brilliant countryside views all around. The cottage itself is very warm and the beds were comfy. The only thing that stopped me giving it top marks were, the pillows which were awful and a few bits that needed some work doing e.g. the fro...
